Horst and Maria was a year-long performance by Prof. Christian Jankowski's class that took place at Tarabya University of Applied Sciences in Turkey. The students and their professor each played "Horst and Maria" two scholarship holders and recorded all their experiences in diary-like entries during their stays.
The book consists of an editorial, a very large diary section (all in German, English and Turkish), several picture spreads and drawings, as well as black double-page spreads that depict and chronicle the political events.
Three embossing dies were produced for the cover design, adorning the book on all three pages with a copper-colored embossing that is based on the wig of the main characters. The copper color is echoed in the endpaper, which is both a geological and temporal tie-in.
